Being Bitten

Hi Professor Wallace, Could you explain my dreams? I dream I am getting bit by various animals but always a snake.

Dream Meaning
When we dream about animals, we are thinking about the more instinctive and impulsive aspects of our nature. Although we may like to consider ourselves as creatures of reason living in a civilized society, we all have urges and drives that are natural expressions of our physical needs. In our dreams, animals usually symbolise aspects of our personalities that are trying to make themselves known in some way.

Being bitten by various animals suggests that there is a situation in your waking life where you are trying to control an impulse to act or an instinctive response to a recurring situation. You feel that you may have a painful experience if you just go ahead and respond to your instincts. It may be that you are anxious about a particular situation in your waking life and all these bites reflect all the little anxieties that you feel are gnawing away at you.

Snakes often represent our ability to grow and mature in waking life. In the same way that a snake sheds its skin, we also help our own healthy growth by discarding aspects of our characters that are no longer useful to us. Being bitten by a snake suggests that you need to leave behind past experiences so that you can move easily into a better future. However, you are concerned what people might think of you as you make this change and are concerned that they will make hurtful remarks.

Big Clouds

When I was very young I used to have very bad dreams that I was in a big field looking up at the sky big white clouds started to chase me so I ran and ran and kept running until I came to the edge which was a sheer drop with no bottom to it before I went over I would wake up crying although I don’t dream it any more I still think off it after 70 years.

Dream Meaning
When we dream of the sky, we are considering our mind and how we use it to perceive the world around us. Dreaming about clouds indicates that we are reflecting on the thoughts that come into our mind. Sometimes these thoughts can be turbulent and stormy; sometimes they can just lazily drift through our minds.

The clouds in your dream represent your emerging self awareness as young child. Up until this point in your life, you would have had the impression that your thoughts came from somewhere else, but then you begin to realise that they actually happen in your own mind. The thoughts that appeared in your mind would rise up from feelings and impulses that you were experiencing. Some of these thoughts would arise from naughty impulses and would arrive in your mind like big white clouds.

You felt that these naughty thoughts were chasing you in some way, encouraging you to do bad things. Your fear was that if you acted on these naughty thoughts and did these bad things, then your parents would punish you and withdraw all their love and support. As a young child this would seem like the end of the world for you; a sheer drop with no bottom.

Erupting Volcano

Dream
HELP!!! I would love someone, finally, to shed a little light on my recurring dream…There’s always a volcano which is erupting in the background and I’m usually making preparation to escape the lava flow.  I’m gathering up people. Pets, and belongings.  I feel it’s Vesuvius although I’m not sure.  There’s always a deep rumbling sound coming from the volcano. I have this dream about once or twice a month sometimes and am beginning to wonder if I am reliving a past life or something!! Would appreciate an analysis just so that I can believe that I’m not actually going potty!

Meaning
When we dream about a volcano we are often concerned that we are about to erupt angrily in certain circumstances. In waking life you probably appear to others as a very calm and peaceful person but now and again you find yourself in a situation that just makes you want to blow your top. However, you usually suppress these feelings and continue to appear balanced and fair minded.

Dreaming of pets usually reflects our need for love and affection, so you are anxious about letting off steam in case you lose the affections of others. Your belongings represent your values and you are worried that  asserting yourself contradicts your values in dealing with others.

When we dream about a sound it often indicates that something unexpected is about to happen and this potentially volatile and unpredictable state makes you even more anxious. The lava flow is the destruction that you feel will surely follow if you give vent to your real feelings.

To move on from this dream, it would be good if you can find some way of releasing these passions that are bubbling away under the surface of your calm exterior. Sometimes you should just tell someone that they are making you angry. There are probably some big issues that really make you overheat but it is best to start on some smaller ones and just give voice to your true feelings. You don’t have to scream and shout but just calmly assert yourself until you feel your needs are being really met. Some activities that are both physical and creative, such as dancing and singing, are a very good way to release this pent up energy.

Although you might be scared of your pent up energy because it may erupt as destructive anger, it is also a very powerful resource of creative passion. As you learn to channel it properly, you will have the feeling that you can move mountains with your talents.

Extra Leg

My mum keeps having the same dream in the dream she has three legs this third leg is coming out of her hip and she feels it hanging out of the side of the bed, also in this dream she keeps trying to get the leg back into the bed.

Dream Meaning
When we dream about out legs, we are considering our ability to stand up for ourselves. Dreaming of a third leg shows that your mum has the capability to offer extra support for others. Like a tripod, these three legs provide a lot of stability, so there is a situation in waking life where your mum is being very stable and supportive. The fact that the third leg is growing out of her hip indicates that she is probably giving this stability and support to a family member.

Our beds are where we feel most comfortable and relaxed and your mum’s attempts to get her third leg back into bed show that she needs to look after herself as well as looking after other people. Although she may appear very capable and supportive, she needs to relax and have some time to herself, instead of looking after others all the time.

Her leg hanging out of the bed in her dream indicates that some of the people whom she helps may unintentionally take advantage of her good nature. Although she doesn’t want to withdraw her support for them, she needs to stand up for her own needs as well as standing up for the needs of others.

Hanging on the Telephone

Hi Dr. Wallace,
For years I have been having dreams that I need to phone someone sometimes it is for help or I am trying to phone someone urgently and I never get through to them for different reasons like I cant get a dialling tone or I cant get through to the number or no one will answer, can you help in giving me some reason why I am having those dreams.

Dream Meaning
When we dream that we are trying to phone someone, we are usually having difficulty in connecting with someone in our waking lives. It can often seem as if it is the fault of the other person we are trying to connect with because they are ignoring us in some way. However, this feeling of not being able to get through to someone is often because of our own communication style, rather than being the fault of the person that we are trying to get in contact with.

When you dream that you need to phone for help or speak to someone urgently, there is a situation in your waking life where you need to ask for assistance but you don’t know how. When you dream that you need to phone urgently, there is something you need to say immediately, but you keep your mouth shut because you don’t know how it will be received at the other end.

Not being able to get a dialling tone or no one answering suggests that you are waiting for someone to ask you if you need any help, rather than you directly asking for assistance yourself. Don’t be too proud to ask for help and don’t be too upset if someone rejects your request. If you can honestly and clearly state what your needs are, other people will always hear them and respond to your call.

Old Fashioned Corridor

Dream
Hi Ian
I have a dream that I’ve moved to a new house, I find a door in the house and when I open it, it opens on to a long corridor with lots of doors in it. It is old fashioned and often has a lady standing in the corridor wearing a long black Victorian dress, she has white hair pulled back into a bun, holds her hands clasped in front of her and when she looks at you her eyes are all white and scary. She also doesn’t want me to go into that part of the house. Can you help?

Meaning
When we dream about a house, we are usually dreaming about our own self and how others see us. Dreaming that we have moved to a new house often means that we have made some sort of change in our waking life that has awakened us to new aspects of our own character. The door that you open symbolises an opportunity that you have taken in your waking life and this has started you on a path that has made lots of other opportunities available to you.

However, it seems as if you are feeling a wee bit overwhelmed by all these potentials and possibilities and are slightly scared of them. The Victorian lady in the corridor is a reflection of your own anxieties about engaging in new and exciting opportunities. Part of you would just like to resist any change to your life and do things the way you have always done them.

This part of you that is resisting change feels old fashioned to you and is stopping you from exploring all these opportunities. You feel worried that you are stepping outside your comfort zone and discovering these new aspects of yourself. However, the Victorian lady is also indicating that you have the accumulated wisdom and experience to be able to step into your new life and make the most of it.

Oral Cancer

Dream
Hi Ian, I keep dreaming that I have cancer of the mouth. The cancer cells keep growing in my lips and my tongue until they fill my whole mouth and I cannot breathe. I wake up screaming and shouting and gasping for breath. In real life, I keep going to the doctor and the dentist for check ups but I always get the all clear. Also, I don’t smoke. Please can you help me?

Meaning
When we dream about any illness or blockage involving our mouths, it is often because there is something that we really need to say to someone in our waking lives. However, we are usually afraid that there will be a negative and unhealthy response if we actually do say it. There is something that you desperately need to express to someone but are frightened to do so. Your fear is that by speaking out and saying how you really feel, you will create a situation that will rapidly grow out of control.

The fact that you wake up screaming and shouting shows how desperate you are to speak your truth and say what really needs to be said. The reason that you are frightened is that you know something will come to an end if you actually say what you feel. This situation may be a job, or a friendship or a romance that was once healthy but has now become toxic and painful.

In the same way that a surgeon removes a cancerous tumour, you need to remove yourself from this unhealthy situation by saying exactly what you feel. Don’t let the conversation grow out of control. As soon as you have said what you feel you need to say, close your mouth, stand back and hear what the other person has to say.

Out of Control Driving

Hi There Dr. Wallace, a recurring dream which I have had, and it worries me, is that I am driving completely out of control.  Sometimes I am drunk in the dream and get into my car knowing its wrong but have no choice because I have to get somewhere to do something in a hurry?!! I’ve had it a few times and it’s really frightening as my car is all over the place!!! What does this mean?

Dream Meaning
When we dream of driving a car we are reflecting on the path that we are taking through life and how we are driving ourselves forward. Dreaming that you are driving your car completely out of control indicates that there is a situation in your waking life where you feel completely out of control.

Being drunk in the dream reflects this loss of control and can often indicate that you are trying to forget the past and quickly move on to something new. It also suggests that you are trying to avoid a difficult situation in waking life by trying to suppress how you really feel rather than facing up to it.

This can result in you feeling all over the place in waking life because there is something that you desperately want to escape from by running away. However, the only road to real and lasting freedom is by standing your ground and sorting the situation out, however scary that might seem. When confronted by a challenge in waking life, your instinct is usually just to do anything, anything at all, to resolve the situation. Instead of responding immediately, just imagine yourself calmly standing back from the challenge and patiently working out the best way to deal with it.

People from the Past

Dear Ian, Every night I am dreaming of people from my past but it is different people each night and I would like to know if this has any meaning as this has been happening for a few weeks.
Would you please advise me if this has any significance? Thank you!

Dream Meaning
When we dream of people from the past, they often represent aspects of our own character that were important to us in the past. The reason that you are reflecting on your past is that there is probably a situation in your current waking life just now that is reminding you of some past experience. This current situation may appear to be a little bit confusing or uncertain but your dream is reminding you of how you dealt with it in the past.

The different people in your dream show that you are examining your present situation from a variety of perspectives as you work out the best way to deal with it. Although what is happening in your waking life may seem to have no connection with your past, this situation is triggering feelings and emotions that you have experienced before in other situations.

The people from the past in your dream are reminding you that you have accumulated wisdom and experience during your life. You now have the power to use this wisdom in whatever challenges that you may encounter in waking life. Even though these challenges may seem unusual and unfamiliar, your older, wiser self intuitively knows how to make the most of them.
