Take Off Struggle

Dear Dr. Ian, I have a reoccurring dream that has been coming to me regularly over the past 5-6 years.  I am rushing to board a large airplane just before take off and I always get on the plane as it is just taking off, the plane always struggles to get off the ground and I find myself flying through the streets with the planes wings only just fitting between the tower blocks and at a very low level, my dream never ever concludes as to whether we make it up into the sky or whether we crash!

Dream Meaning
When we dream about an airplane we are usually considering big ideas or projects that we are working on in waking life. The fact that you are rushing to board the plane indicates that you are putting yourself under pressure to get these projects launched. Although the projects do get off the ground, you sometimes find it a struggle to keep them going.

The streets in your dream reflect the fact that you know there are specific paths you have to follow as you attempt to keep a project aloft. The tower blocks represent the official procedures and practicalities that you have to navigate your way through. Even though your progress may appear to be touch and go, you always manage to get the project off the ground.

However, you often feel unsure about the successful outcome of the project and this is probably reflected in waking life where you are uncertain if the big plan is really going to take off in the way that you would like it to. Your gut instinct tells you that it will be a success but you sometimes find it challenging to clearly articulate this to others.

Royal Tea

Dear Dr. Wallace,
I often have a dream where I am out for a walk and I realise that I am walking through the grounds of a royal palace. At first I am a bit nervous that someone will spot me intruding and throw me out but no-one seems to notice and I begin to relax and enjoy the surroundings. As  I  walk along, I see a palace in the distance and there is a woman waving to me from the steps. I am surprised when I realise it’s the queen and to crown it all, she invites me in for a lovely afternoon tea! Does this dream mean anything or is it just wishful thinking?

Dream Meaning
When we dream about royalty we are thinking about the aspects of our own personality that we respect and admire. In your waking life you probably rely on the respect and admiration of others to boost your own self esteem and confidence. Although you may be held in high esteem by others, you are often not aware of this and you may feel unappreciated by them sometimes.

If you are feeling confident and worthy of appreciation, you can sometimes feel like a bit of an impostor and are anxious that someone will catch you out somehow. However, you usually realise that others are being genuinely appreciative and you begin to relax as it all becomes a bit of a walk in the park for you.

Dreaming of a palace symbolises the gracious and confident aspects of your character and it is often a shock to you when you realise how relaxed and confident you can actually be sometimes. As you recognise your own power and authority you are quite surprised at yourself and how fulfilled it makes you feel. The meaning of your dream is that you should let yourself be more confident in he public eye and allow other people to praise and admire you.

Offside Tunnel

Hi Ian, I had this weird dream where I was playing football. The funny thing was that my team was made up from the guys that I work with but we were playing against a team that was all referees. We could only get the ball past them by playing right on the touchline and bending the ball past them. Every time I got close to the goal the refs whistled for a penalty. I got the other guys to stand around me so the refs couldn’t see me and dug a wee tunnel into the goal. Once I was standing in the goal with the ball, the refs gave me around of applause but one of them said the tunnel was offside!

Dream Meaning
When we dream of playing football we are usually considering our role in a team activity. There is probably a work situation in your waking life where you and your team are trying to achieve a specific goal. You are finding this difficult to achieve because of all the rules and regulations imposed by your management and those in positions of authority.

Although you are trying to play by the official rulebook, you are having to push the boundaries and bend the rules to actually progress towards your goal. As you approach your objective your bosses begin to cry foul and blow the whistle on your unofficial methods. To actually reach your goal you have to use your informal underground network and be covertly supported by your workmates.

After achieving your goal, your management applaud your efforts although one of managers questions your methods. Your dream shows that you are a highly effective team player who is fully committed to achieving your chosen goal. However, you can be even more successful if you can help the management team understand why you have to work this way to get a decent result. Rather than seeing them as an opposing team, try and get them on your side.

Finding a Shower

Hi  Ian, I keep dreaming about showers and since I have a shower first thing in the morning after I get up, the dreams seem even more vivid and weird. In my dream I am trying to find someplace to have a shower but all the showers I find seem really cramped, cold, dark and difficult to stand up in. I usually give up and find myself in the bathroom of a girl that I know. She tells me to use her shower but I can’t work the controls. I get covered with a horrible hot and gunky mess that comes out of the shower head  and end up dirtier than when I went in it. How can I stop having these dreams?

Dream Meaning
When we dream about having a shower we are often reflecting on a situation in waking life that seems a bit messy or makes us feel guilty in some way. This situation is limiting your individual freedom and restricting the choices that you feel you have. You may also be finding it difficult to stand up for yourself because you feel partially responsible for the sticky situation that you are currently in.

Although you are keen to make a fresh start, you find it tricky to make a clean break from your current circumstances. This probably involves a romantic relationship and even though you keep going back to your lover, there is something about this relationship that makes it seem a complete mess to you.

Every time you try and sort it out it just gets messier and and although your lover might shower you with affection, she is probably a bit of hot head who you feel you can’t control. Instead of clarifying where you stand with her, you usually end up become even more involved in this messy and intense relationship. To move on from this dream you need to clearly state your emotional needs to your lover and make sure that she understands them.
