Bellamy's People

Episode 6 of the fabulous Bellamy’s People has a brilliant spoof of a dream interpreter, played by the wonderful Lucy Montgomery. You can catch the show on the BBC iPlayer and the dream interpretation starts at about 3 minutes and 20 seconds. It made me weep with laughter because it is such an accurate potrayal of how most self acclaimed dream analysts/doctors/experts work.

However, the dream that Gary shared sounds exactly like the sort of dream that Paul Whitehouse might have. According to Johnny Depp, Paul is the best character actor in the world and I imagine that the boundaries can become very blurred between his real self and the characters that he so skilfully plays. Here is the dream…

‘I was in my bed and the wardrobe fell on me and completely covered me with all its contents.’

…and that suggests that the dreamer habitually hides his true self behind an array of assumed identities. The dreamer does this to please others and be accepted socially but he can find it quite overwhelming. Sometimes it can be a great release to shrug off old habits and just be his real self.

Test Tube

Hi Ian, I am an adult but my dream is that I am travelling on the tube to get to school. I have a feeling that I am late for a test. I have a feeling that I do not know where I am going on the tube and have to change lines. Changing tubes is scary because it seems more dangerous than in real life. I used to walk to school in real life. Once I get to school I can not find my class because I am too busy trying to find out where the school dinners are being served.
Thanks for your time, Mo

Dream Meaning
Dreaming of travelling in a tube train indicates that you feel that your life is following a tightly defined path where you do what is expected of you. It also suggests that you think that your efforts at work are often not fully recognised by your colleagues. This is frustrating for you because trying to get to school shows that you are keen to have your individual talents recognised and validated by other people.

However, to really have your talents properly recognised by other people, you may have to change direction in your career. This can seem scary and dangerous for you because you are unsure of where you really want your career to take you. The feeling of being late for a test reflects that you have very high standards and you feel that you should be further on in your professional life that you actually are.

Although you do make it to school, the fact that you spend your time looking for school dinners points to your real goal in life. Food usually symbolises a sense of fulfillment, so you should pursue a career path that is personally fulfilling, rather than just doing what is expected of you.

Stinging Remarks

Dream
Hi Ian
I was an actor playing the part of a Cockney gangster. For one scene I had to to put a stinging wasp in my mouth for some reason. Although I had been told that the sting had been disabled and I would not get hurt, as soon as I closed my mouth with the wasp inside it went crazy. I opened my mouth  put my hand in and grabbed the wasp, squashed it and washed it away under a running hot water tap that was next to me. I woke up feeling unable to open my mouth fast enough to get it out before it was going to sting me.
Thanks, Jez

Meaning
When we dream of being actor, it often reflects a need to play out a particular role in waking life. You are probably in a romantic relationship with someone where you feel that you need to appear as tough, streetwise, bad boy character. The reason that you assume this role and behaviour is to make you appear more attractive to your partner.

However, playing this part is sometimes like having words put in your mouth. You often find yourself saying what you think that your partner wants to hear rather than expressing how you really feel. Even though you are just acting out your role when you speak these words, you are not sure if they will be received as harmless sarcasm or a stinging rebuke.

This results in a situation where you don’t know if you are bringing a buzz to your relationship or just being really hurtful. Feeling that you have to behave in this way with your partner is driving you crazy and you want to take some kind of action. Running water often symbolises a free flow of feelings and emotions, so you take the sting out of your words by saying what you genuinely feel.

Toilet Mice

Dream
Hi Ian
My place of work was infested with very small mice – mostly appearing on the loo seats. I kept flicking them in and flushing them away one by one but there always seem to be more and more. I also want to put traps on the seats but am scared that I will sit on a trap by mistake and do myself a mischief.
Thanks, Jonathan

Meaning
Dreaming of mice often indicates small problems and anxieties that individually appear to be quite unremarkable and inconsequential. However, these little worries can  mount up into bigger problems that are far more disturbing and destructive. The mice in your dream probably represent some seemingly minor issues and concerns that you have about certain situations in your workplace.

Although you are trying to ignore what is happening, all these little anxieties are accumulating into major worries for you and this is really gnawing away at your self confidence. Toilet seats often symbolise a place where we go to express our needs and relieve our inner tensions. Even though you are managing to deal with these apparently trivial problems one by one, it seems that you are not getting to the bottom of what is causing all your concerns.

You would like to express your concerns about particular workplace issues as soon as they arise but you feel that you will be seen as a mischief maker. You are also concerned that it might be a painful experience for you, but you need to decide if you are a man or a mouse and just say what is on your mind.

Rambling House

Dream
Hello Ian
I have a recurring dream that I am in a large rambling house and I am exploring the rooms. It is a very emotional dream but I am not sure what the emotion is because I am not frightened. The more I explore the more rooms I find and there are boxes of possessions etc in the rooms – they are unoccupied. It is as if I could live there if I wanted to. It is always a real labyrinth with lots of small passageways and twisting stairways and I enjoy looking into each room.
Yours, Lucy

Meaning
The house in your dream symbolises your own self and the rooms you are exploring represent different aspects of your own character and identity. Your dream reflects what you are doing in your waking life which is probably considering bigger questions about yourself such as who you are, why you are here and what does it all mean.

The emotion that you are experiencing is an excited anticipation of growing self awareness rather than an anxiety or a fear. The more that you explore your identity, then the more you become aware of who you really are and can begin to make more sense of your life. The boxes of possessions represent the true value of the wisdom that you have accumulated during your life and the unoccupied rooms symbolise your potential for continued personal growth,

The feeling that you could live there if you wanted to suggests that there is nothing to stop you continuing your self exploration and enjoying your inner wealth. The labyrinthine small passage ways show that there is a lot still to find out and it may not all be simple and straightforward. However the process of exploration will be extremely rewarding and satisfying for you.

Jealous Depths

Dream
Hi Ian
I have a recurring dream of diving into water …. often green and murky …. I dive in perfectly straight so sink to a great depth …. I then start arching my back and begin to turn to rise up to the surface but I do it too quickly and start to rotate in the water …. I begin to turn faster and faster until I am so disorientated that I no longer know which way is up …. I am conscious that I cannot hold my breath for much longer and I panic because I don’t know which way to swim to the surface…
Elspeth

Meaning
When you dream of water you are reflecting on your own emotions and experiences. There is probably a romantic situation in your waking life where you have dived straight in and become deeply involved in a very short space of time. The green and murky water indicates that you are  unsure about your feelings of jealousy in this situation and so you are keen to bring some clarity to them.

As you try to clarify the nature of your new relationship, you attempt to stand back from it so you can take things more lightly. However, this sends you into a bit of an emotional spin and you are not sure whether to end the relationship or just to continue to go with the flow. Your breath symbolises your rational mind and you are concerned that your deeper instincts are taking over your ability to reason properly.

You are desperate to return to the world of rationality but you are being swamped by your feelings and you are no longer sure what to do. Rather than continuing to completely immerse yourself in this new romance, try standing back a little and firmly deciding what you really want from the relationship.

Solo Performance

Dream
Hi Ian
I stand up to play lead guitar on ‘We are The Champions’. My friend who teaches music is accompanying me. However in real life and in my dream I have never learned to play guitar!! So why I or anyone would think I could play this to an audience is a puzzle. I pretend to play a few bars?? then when a solo part comes I confess to not being able to do it!!
Gary

Meaning
Dreaming of standing up to play an instrument, even one that you can’t play, suggests that you would like to become proficient at performing a specific skill at your workplace or in public. Your dream indicates that you have performed this particular piece of work before, probably with the guidance of a colleague, but you lack the confidence to do it solo.

However, you are unsure of your abilities and are concerned that you have no formal training for doing this particular work, especially doing it in front of other people. The knowledge and techniques that this skill requires are a bit of a puzzle for you at the moment and you are uncertain if you will be able to learn them. You often imagine doing this piece of work but then quickly bring yourself back to reality.

Although you really want to reach the level of performance and recognition that you desire, the main thing that is holding you back is not your lack of talent but your lack of confidence in your own abilities. The more confident that you are in learning this skill, the easier it will be for you to attain other professional qualifications and skills.

Crazy Woman

Dream
Hello Ian
I am in a safe house for spies and all the rooms are tiled in white like in a public toilet or a mental house. The rooms are full of all sorts of different coloured bottles. A crazy skinny screaming woman is chasing me in the house and I lock myself in the bathroom but she is banging on the door to break it. I am terrified and I know that she wants to kill me  She screams my name all the time and sometimes she threatens me – other times she tells me she is in love with me. I know that she will smash all the bottles and then drown me in the bath if I let her in.
Elizabeth

Meaning
The safe house in your dream symbolises your own self and your need to feel safe and secure. The different rooms in the house represent the different aspects of your own character. Tiled white rooms suggest that you always try to keep your emotions under tight control so that you don’t end up in any messy situations. Although you appear calm and in control to the people around you, the coloured bottles show that you are bottling all your feelings up inside you.

Your emotional self appears in your dreams as the skinny, crazy woman. She is skinny because you are limiting your emotional growth by keeping other people at a distance and she is shouting crazily because you try not to listen to your own real feelings in waking life. By locking yourself in the bathroom, you are trying to lock away your own needs but they just won’t go away.

You are terrified to express your needs to other people in case you might release a whole lot of bottled up feelings and end up drowning in self pity. However, you need to find a healthy outlet for your feelings, rather than just spying on them from a safe distance.

Intimate Intrusion

Dream
Hi Ian
I am in the airport returning from holiday with my husband when customs stop me and say that I am importing illegal drugs! then they bring out this big metal pair of knickers. They want me to take off my clothes and put on the knickers so that they can use instruments to poke around inside me! I say that I am not doing this and it is against human rights and what evidence do they have – all this is still in the middle of the airport and is creating a scene.
Mandy

Meaning
Dreaming about being in possession of illegal drugs often shows that your own personal view of a particular situation is different from the views of people in positions of authority. Being at the airport and returning from holiday suggests that you have just successfully completed some sort of project at work. Going through customs indicates some type of project review where your performance is being examined by your management.

Although your project has been successful, the managers want to review your methods in more intimate detail and this begins to make you feel quite uncomfortable. The metal knickers show that their demands are precise and unyielding and this is making you feel very vulnerable. This is not an invasion of your physical intimacy, but a probing of the personal beliefs and values that you hold dear.

This makes you feel that your freedom to work the way you choose is being threatened by those in authority. Although they may be trying to ensure that you follow their customary practices, it seems more like an invasion of your personal space. To protect your private life and ensure that your talents are recognised, you need to set clear operating boundaries with your work colleagues.
