Abandoned Baby

Hi Dr Wallace, I wake up sometimes thinking I’ve left a baby I was looking after in the park by mistake or even worse sometimes I seem to remember a baby I’ve left by mistake in an attic days/weeks even years before….it is terrifying till I realise its not real.
I have a grown up family who are all away and I don’t look after anyone’s babies, never have, except my own and I was very careful and would never have left them anywhere!!
What on earth does it mean? ….Thank you…Babs  :o )

Dream Meaning
When we dream about a baby, we are often dreaming about something that is very close to us. The baby symbolises a precious part of yourself and represents a unique passion or talent that you possess. The attic symbolises some of your most valuable ideas for expressing this talent. However, you have been ignoring them and now these thoughts are trying to get your waking attention.

The abandoned baby in your dream represents something unique that you wanted to create through a process of love and labour. Due to circumstances at the time, you had to abandon this love but now you have the opportunity to rediscover and explore these ambitions from the past. This can seem terrifying to you because you realise that you that you have abandoned a part of yourself that was very close to your heart and an expression of your true identity.

It is never too late to explore your forgotten potential by rediscovering this love or passion from the past. When you laid these passions aside, for whatever reasons,  you did it in the hope that you would one day return to them and use them to fully express your talents and individuality.  That time is now.

Aeroplane Air Bubble

Hi Ian,
I keep having a recurring dream where I am in an aeroplane which stops and vertically crashes into the sea. There is an air bubble at the back of the plane and this is were I am the only person who has my head in it and isn’t drowning.

Dream Meaning
When we dream about an aeroplane we are often thinking about a particular situation in our working life. Aeroplane flights usually symbolise projects that are being run to a timetable or specific issues that have to be resolved by an agreed deadline. Your dream suggests that you are working on a project that has encountered some difficulties and is in danger of falling short of its objectives.

Dreaming of the sea reflects the feelings of everyone involved in the project and the situation is becoming very emotional as the project appears to be swamped by problems. Apart from you, everyone else is immersed in their emotions and you are the only one who is managing to stay calm. Rather than wallowing around in self pity, you are trying to think clearly and see how you can survive this difficult situation.

However, remaining in your bubble of air at the back of the aeroplane suggests that you are consciously distancing yourself from the people who you are working with. This may help you survive the situation individually but may not be very helpful for the others in your team. Try sharing your ideas with your colleagues so they can start to get their heads above water too.

Angry Parents

Dream
Hi Ian,
Both my parents died when they were relatively young (47 & 56).I was 14 when my father died and am now 55.  I had an excellent relationship with both of them but whenever I have dreamt about them they are angry with me which is very upsetting.  Also in the dreams they are always suffering from their final illnesses.
Thanks
Mary

Meaning
When we dream that other people are angry with us, we are usually feeling angry with our own behaviour but  are finding it difficult or inappropriate to express this anger in waking life.  The frustrated feelings of anger that you are experiencing are probably a result of the sad loss of your parents at a relatively young age. Even though your parents could not help it, you still feel annoyed that they left you on your own.

The anger in your dream is a direct and honest expression of how you feel as you attempt to come to terms with your feelings of abandonment and the premature loss of their parental love and guidance.  Losing your parents at a young age means that you had to grow up quickly and some of your anger is caused by the loss of your own teenage years.

Dreaming of their final illnesses shows that even after all this time, you are still ill at ease with your own feelings of being abandoned. Although you had an excellent relationship with both your parents, you still need to acknowledge your own angry feelings so that you can finally begin to accept your loss and move on.

Awkward Aeroplanes

Dream
hi ian how are you? i heard you on bbc southern counties radio the othernight and wanted to ask your advice on something. im 25 years old and i have a reoccuring dream about aeroplanes where im watching them in the sky and they land awkward or something happens but i feel nervous. i looked in a dream book and it said that people who have these dreams could have an abused past, and its true coz i was raped when i was 16. i wondered if you could give me any further advice or information on this, i would be very grateful. hope to hear from you. take care. x

Meaning
Thanks for getting touch and thanks for sharing your dream.  When we dream about aeroplanes, we are usually reflecting on plans that we are thinking about in our waking lives. The aeroplanes and the routes they take through the sky symbolise those plans and where they might take us.

Your dream suggests that there are a number of plans that you have in life but you feel nervous about embarking on any of them in case they end awkwardly or something goes wrong with them.

This nervousness and lack of confidence in following through the plans you make probably has its roots in the trauma you suffered when you were 16.  However, although you may now find it difficult to trust people and have the same level of confidence that you had before your traumatic experience, the only way to move forward and realise your dreams is to begin to truly build up your confidence and trust in others.

The most natural and secure way to be able to confide in others and trust them is to trust your own self and to have confidence in what you do. Although it can be challenging sometimes to have real trust and confidence in what we do, just think of situations in your life where you are really confident and certain of what you are doing. Try and hold that feeling so you can remember it, and then when you encounter a situation where you don’t feel so confident, then just remember that feeling and let you confidence build.

The more you do this, the more confident in yourself you will become, and before you know it you will be flying the aeroplanes in your dreams and guiding them into perfect landings!

Basements and Attics

Dream
Hi Ian
I have a recurring dream where I hear a noise in the basement. I decide to go and investigate but instead of making my way down to the basement, I go looking for the source of the noise in the attic. I tell myself that I do this because the basement is dark and wet and the attic is light and airy, but every time I find myself in the attic I get really annoyed and keep wondering how I end up there. What is going on?
Thanks, Chris

Meaning
When you dream about a noise, it usually indicates that something is changing in your waking life and that you are being presented with the chance to make the most of this change. The basement often represents your emotional life and how you relate to your feelings and experiences. The attic tends to symbolise your thoughts and ideas and how you logically try to work things out.

The noise in the basement is an opportunity to explore some feelings about past experiences that you have been keeping locked away. These feelings have started to affect your waking life and you are looking for ways to come to terms with them and move on. Your usual approach to these feelings is to treat them lightly and airily, rather than investigating them in a bit more depth.

However, trying to work through your deeper feelings from an intellectual perspective is never  effective and so you just end up feeling annoyed and frustrated. Instead of constantly theorising about your past experiences, the best way to resolve your feelings is to discuss them with someone who you trust. As you open up to them, you will also open yourself up to valuable new opportunities.

Baths and Bikinis

Dear Ian, Would you please be so kind and let me know what the meaning is of the next two dreams.

1st dream:
I dream I was in the bath. And the bath became this long (but narrow) swimming pool. And I was swimming so nicely, like never before. I remember  this amazing feeling of peace and joy.

2nd dream:
I was at this function where I met so many people. Mostly true women friends. (that I don’t have a lot of at the moment)The one girl had to leave  to go back to her house. And she sent me a present with a necklace, white bikini. Thank you kindly for your help.

Dream Meanings
In your first dream, when we dream of water we are usually reflecting on our feelings and emotions. Dreaming of being in a bath suggests that you are feeling comfortable and relaxed in your emotions. The bath growing into a long swimming pool indicates the potential for your emotional world to grow and to carry you forward through life. Feeling peaceful and joyful shows your contentment in waking life by understanding the importance of your feelings and how you can feel fulfilled by acknowledging them.

In your second dream, the people at the function symbolise potential ways for you to develop and grow in your life, with the true women friends representing parts of your own identity that you are intimate and comfortable with.  When we dream of a house, we are dreaming about our self as we experience it at the moment, so the one girl going back to her house is you reflecting on your current self amongst all the possibilities of the people you could be. A necklace celebrates and draws attention to the union between mind and body and a bikini symbolises that you are not afraid to show your vulnerability and that you are proud of your intuitive awareness. This suggests that you are using both your head and your heart in waking life and that you are being open and honest with yourself and others.

Both dreams suggest that you will make the most of the opportunities that are developing in your life just now by being open and honest about your needs, and not being afraid to speak your truth as you step into your power.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Dream
Hello Ian
I was desperate to use the bathroom whilst wandering around an office block full of multi-bed rooms and large ablution facilities i.e. rows of sinks toilets showers etc. I am constantly meeting people and therefore never get to use the bathroom.
Thanks, Jim

Meaning
Dreaming about different rooms usually indicates that you are thinking different aspects of your own character. Bathrooms are where you go to get rid of what is no longer healthy or sustaining for you and to clean up any situations that might be getting a bit messy. A bedroom is often where you are most relaxed and aware of who you really are and what you really need.

Wandering around the office block shows that you are desperate to express your own needs in your workplace but you are wondering how to do it. All the beds and the bathrooms suggest that you often have the opportunity to tell others what you need but you never actually manage to do this. This is because you are constantly meeting the needs of other people rather than looking after your own needs.

Although you hope that your own needs will be met if you look after the needs of your colleagues, they usually just end up dumping their problems on you. The best way to resolve this tension is to establish some personal boundaries by making sure that you put your own needs before the needs of others now and again.

Being Bitten

Hi Professor Wallace, Could you explain my dreams? I dream I am getting bit by various animals but always a snake.

Dream Meaning
When we dream about animals, we are thinking about the more instinctive and impulsive aspects of our nature. Although we may like to consider ourselves as creatures of reason living in a civilized society, we all have urges and drives that are natural expressions of our physical needs. In our dreams, animals usually symbolise aspects of our personalities that are trying to make themselves known in some way.

Being bitten by various animals suggests that there is a situation in your waking life where you are trying to control an impulse to act or an instinctive response to a recurring situation. You feel that you may have a painful experience if you just go ahead and respond to your instincts. It may be that you are anxious about a particular situation in your waking life and all these bites reflect all the little anxieties that you feel are gnawing away at you.

Snakes often represent our ability to grow and mature in waking life. In the same way that a snake sheds its skin, we also help our own healthy growth by discarding aspects of our characters that are no longer useful to us. Being bitten by a snake suggests that you need to leave behind past experiences so that you can move easily into a better future. However, you are concerned what people might think of you as you make this change and are concerned that they will make hurtful remarks.

Big Clouds

When I was very young I used to have very bad dreams that I was in a big field looking up at the sky big white clouds started to chase me so I ran and ran and kept running until I came to the edge which was a sheer drop with no bottom to it before I went over I would wake up crying although I don’t dream it any more I still think off it after 70 years.

Dream Meaning
When we dream of the sky, we are considering our mind and how we use it to perceive the world around us. Dreaming about clouds indicates that we are reflecting on the thoughts that come into our mind. Sometimes these thoughts can be turbulent and stormy; sometimes they can just lazily drift through our minds.

The clouds in your dream represent your emerging self awareness as young child. Up until this point in your life, you would have had the impression that your thoughts came from somewhere else, but then you begin to realise that they actually happen in your own mind. The thoughts that appeared in your mind would rise up from feelings and impulses that you were experiencing. Some of these thoughts would arise from naughty impulses and would arrive in your mind like big white clouds.

You felt that these naughty thoughts were chasing you in some way, encouraging you to do bad things. Your fear was that if you acted on these naughty thoughts and did these bad things, then your parents would punish you and withdraw all their love and support. As a young child this would seem like the end of the world for you; a sheer drop with no bottom.

Big Room, Tiny Man

Hello Dr. Ian, I have this dream again and again where I am trapped in the living room of my house. My living room seems absolutely massive in the dream and although I think I am normal sized, it feels like I am really tiny. I really need to get to the bathroom to go to the toilet, but the doors just keep getting further and further away every time I try to reach a door to get out. I try to get to the window as well so I can shout for help but it just keeps getting smaller and smaller and I keep sinking deeper and deeper into the living room carpet and no one can hear me. Can you explain what is going on?

Dream Meaning
When we dream about our house, we are usually dreaming about our own self and our identity. The rooms in our house represent the different aspects of our character and the living room is where we often show our public face to others. In your dream, the aspects of your character that you are showing to others appear far larger than they actually are and so in waking life, your probably like to appear to others as a larger than life character.

Although you may enjoy the attention that you receive by appearing larger than life, it results in you feeling trapped as you cannot find a way to step out of this character that you have created. Trying to get to the bathroom shows that you are trying to state your needs in waking life but you feel that your public image would be diminished if you actually managed to express what you really need.

Attempting to get to the window indicates that you are trying to show other people who you really are deep down inside but the window of opportunity for doing this is becoming smaller and smaller. To move on from this dream, you need to start showing some of your vulnerabilities and weaknesses to others in waking life.
