Hair Shaving Dream

Hello Ian, thank you for taking the time to read my message to you. I have been having a recurring dream now for the last 10 years or so and would really love to know it’s meaning. In my dream I return to an ex lover (in real life he dumped me for another woman with no explanation) anyway in the dream he comes back into my life weak and begging forgiveness and I fall straight back in love with him, I dream of us making love and then straight after he’s gone and then I’m left feeling very low at which point I shave of all my head hair. Please help me to better understand why this dream keeps recurring because the dream effects me emotionally afterwards. thanks again for reading my message.

Dream Meaning
Ian often says that Dreams do not happen to the dreamer but that dreamers happen to the dream. This understanding reminds us that we are the ones creating and reflecting upon our own experiences, therefore empowering us to fully embrace all the aspects of our dreams and ultimately ourselves.

By getting back together with your ex, it would seem that you are reconnecting with an aspect of yourself that you have perhaps previously believed was a less attractive side to your nature and as a consequence may have attempted to ‘dump’.

This characteristic appears to you as male, weak and begging forgiveness in order to be accepted. This could indicate that you are trying to find forgiveness for, and unite with a part of yourself that is perhaps usually quite a masculine, strong, assertive maybe even an angry aspect of your nature that you may have found difficult to accept.

Our hair grows from our heads, so dreaming about hair often means that we are contemplating our thoughts or ideas, and in a deeper way, reflecting on the strength and nature of our beliefs. So by shaving all your head hair off this may be reflecting your desire to free yourself from the habitual thought patterns that keep you from embracing yourself fully and have left you feeling quite low and disconnected at times.

When we have dreams reoccur in our lives they are often showing us that we are repeating a particular way of behaving in our waking lives that is out of sync with our own true nature. You might try asking yourself some of the following questions as a way to work with and gain insights about this dynamic, allowing you to shed this dream once and for all.

1. Is there a part of yourself that you sometimes want to get rid of?

2. How might you express what you truly believe?

3. What situations/ people in your life empower and excite you?

Dying Fish Dream

Hi Ian
I’m really concerned as I’m having awful dreams about my fish dying. I have a large tank and over 50 fish and love them all dearly. Collecting and caring for fish is my prized hobby and the thought of any fish dying is just saddening. I have these dreams almost every single night where one or all fish die. Each dream is different but most of them I find the fish floating at the top. It is beginning to disturb me and have now developed a fear of loosing my fish.
Please help!! I’m desperate!!
Kiara

Dream Meaning
The language of dreams is imaginal and not often literal, so dreaming about your fish dying is unlikely to reflect the loss of your actual fish in waking life.

When we dream about fish it usually means that we are contemplating aspects of our own intuitive nature. Water is associated with our emotions, so as fish inhabit, and are able to navigate the water, we are made aware of the link to our intuitive knowledge that arises through our emotions. Dreaming about a beloved pet that has died is often about some instinct that needs to be nurtured and has in some way felt neglected or unattended to.

The fact that you care well for your fish in your waking life seems to indicate a natural affinity with your intuitive and emotional nature. This is also reflected in your dreams, however, internally you have observed quite a different outcome. Your dreams may be revealing that you have a huge amount to gain from nurturing your intuitive self-expression and by doing so you may inspire (rather than expire) and find it to be a rewarding experience.

To get an idea of how your instincts can be encouraged to surface perhaps you could try asking yourself ‘If I were one of my fish, what sort of environment would support me to flourish?’ By exploring dream metaphors in this way, we are able to reveal a lot about ourselves that perhaps we didn’t even know we knew.

Collapsing Staircase Dream

Good Morning Ian, At least here in the states it is still the morning. I am intrigued by your website and thought I’d try to see if I couldn’t get some help interpreting a dream that has many aspects to it.

In the dream I am away at a resort/hotel sitting out on a patio enjoying myself with all of the wives of my bosses (who I also consider friends & are all part of one large family). I notice that the cobblestone paths and roadway are not level and very bumpy, I then begin to notice that just about all of the construction is of a lesser quality as far as the plastering, painting etc. I go in the hotel to my room and when I come back out to join the others downstairs, I have to go down a black metal spiral staircase to the lobby area. As I try to proceed down the stairs they keep collapsing and moving as I try to decend. Although I am frightened, I decide that I am able to essentially climb down the structure as if it were a ladder by grabbing onto pieces of metal and climb down hand/foot backward. I am successful in getting to the lobby without any further problems and begin to warn the others but they seem to not care or arent’ listening.
Thank you for considering this interpretation. Dawn .

Dream Meaning
Dreaming about a hotel or resort usually indicates that you are reflecting on a temporary identity that you show to others, a persona. Being on the patio would suggest that it is about your involvement within a specific social or work environment.

You begin by feeling very connected and comfortable with the feminine aspects of your nature and the sense of enjoyment, empathy and community that brings. Your awareness then shifts to the paths and roadways, which are often seen as our potential directions in life, opportunities or career paths, perhaps you are beginning to see the possibility of a rocky ride ahead. This also fits with the disillusion about the façade that has been presented to you.

Your growing awareness triggers a retreat to your room, a more private thoughtful place where you feel most comfortable. From there you realise that in order to reach others in a deeper way, instigate any action or change, or to open more doors of opportunity (all reflected in the need to get to the lobby) you must first tangle with a rigid, controlling and perhaps gloomy framework that is already in place. When you try to move forward upon it, it collapses and moves, this may be symbolic of some restructuring or perhaps an unwieldy structure that you are finding unsupportive.

Then you show great courage and determination, by engaging with your autonomous, creative and assertive self, you take a more unconventional approach revealing a lighter perspective and a less dominating presence (a ladder as opposed to a staircase) and by taking a step back, you are finally able to move forwards.

You are successful, and show a desire to share your experiences with others, it would seem that this particular social or work group are not as receptive as they perhaps first appeared. This dream may be revealing a desire to be part of a group that relate to each other in a more meaningful, connected and open way.

Nightclub Dentist Dream

Last night I dreamt that I was in my local nightclub on a Saturday night and when I walked into the seated area of the club there was two dental chairs in the middle. I then got my teeth checked by one of the men who was my old guidance teacher when I was at school. I was then told that my two front bottom teeth had psoriasis. Much appreciated if you would be able to tell me what this means.

Dream meaning
When we dream about teeth we are often thinking about our confidence and ability to assert ourselves in our waking lives. The nightclub represents a social arena, maybe a circle of friends, or perhaps a club that you are involved with. It is night time and this indicates that you find an aspect of this environment unfamiliar, giving rise to feelings of uncertainty about expressing yourself confidently.

There is a seated area with 2 dental chairs in the middle. Chairs are often dreamt in connection with habitual ways of behaving and these chairs may represent a couple of ways you would usually handle this type of situation. They also give the impression of having similar outcomes and appear to be central to this dynamic.

You are checked by ‘one of the men’, men often being a reflection of particular skills and abilities, perhaps you are checking your own in this circumstance. It is specifically your old guidance teacher in this instance, which may show a tendency towards following previously learned advise about how to behave, schoolteachers usually being symbolic of the lessons we have learned.

You were informed that your 2 front bottom teeth had psoriasis, mirroring the 2 chairs, making the link between habitual ways of being and confident self expression. Psoriasis is an itchy skin condition and so could be seen as your having something that you are ‘itching’ to say and it appears to be coming to the surface. By holding back, you may be experiencing feelings of ‘irritation’ or ‘restlessness’.

It would seem that you are encountering a situation that requires you to be up front! Having confidence in what you have to offer can only lead to a win win situation!

Scary Cancer Dream

Hi Ian,
So I listened to you on radio 2 last night and if you have time, I had a dream last night that was really vivid and stayed with me:

I’m sitting with my family and I’ve been told I have cancer and will die next friday. My Gran is there (she died in 2005, on a Friday, from cancer and she was a huge part of my life) and my Aunty (Gran’s sister) and mam. I’m crying because I’m saying I don’t want to die, I’m too young and I’m scared because I don’t know what it’s going to be like. There is something they can do, Gran can swap with me and take the cancer but she refuses saying she can’t go through it again and she’s sorry. Then I woke up.

Thank you so much for reading this. I’m slightly scared of what it means, hope it’s nothing bad.
Victoria

Dream Meaning

Dreams are not often literal, so when we dream about cancer we are usually being made aware of a situation that we feel may be growing out of control. An example of this might be an unhealthy side to a relationship, or an over commitment to something that takes up too much of our time, preventing healthy growth.

Death can be seen as transformation or change and as it is connected with your family, this would suggest a change of some familiar ways of being or habitual behaviors. By crying you are allowing your emotions to come to the surface and you show how challenging it feels to leave these familiar ways behind.

Dreaming of your Gran is not only loving and supportive but also seems to reflect your capacity and potential for growth, wisdom and maturity. Your Auntie and Mum being present as well, may suggest a strong feminine connection or influence relating to this situation.

Being told that you will die next Friday could be mirroring the imminence of this opportunity for change and may also be reflecting the process of loss and the necessity of letting go in order to move forward healthily, as you perhaps felt you needed to do around the time of losing your Gran.

This dream seems to be supporting you to bring an unhealthy situation into check and although this can feel scary, you can be reassured that you already possess all the support and wisdom you need to bring about a healthy change.

School Bus and Exams Dream

If you do get a chance to look at this thanks a million. I heard you on radio 2 and I was fascinated. I have had this dream every 2 to 4 weeks for the last year or so, but I’ve had it on and off since I left school. My dream starts with me starting back at my school, I am going back to sixth form, the oldest pupil in the school. I wear a uniform and dream of various aspects of school, usually including a public bus journey via a weird route there as I’m late and miss the regular school bus, and the canteen. I study for my A levels and then the exams spring up on me and I’m totally unprepared. The dream ends as I realise I have already taken these exams and I left school and moved on 12 years ago!!

 Dream Meaning
Dreaming of school usually symbolises our learning or working environment and the valuable lessons learned, or being learned, there. The fact that you are back at your old school again indicates that you are probably learning the same old lesson again, and as the lesson recurs, so does the dream. Going back as the oldest pupil may also be revealing a level of frustration in this environment and perhaps a feeling of being held back.

Busses usually represent our career or ambition and drive. The public bus journey would suggest that you are on board with a particular organisation that you perceive as going ‘around the houses’ before arriving at the desired outcome.  This leaves you feeling as though you have ‘missed out’ on the regular bus, the more direct and skilful route, and the canteen, fulfilling your appetite for success and the satisfaction that would bring you.

Being in uniform suggests that you present yourself as being in agreement and fitting in with others but studying for your ‘A’ levels indicates that you have high standards and pride yourself on good results. The way that they ‘spring up’ on you may reflect the pressure that you put yourself under at times and perhaps feel that you are being personally judged or graded on the success or failure of this project.

To really move on this time your dream seems to convey a ‘less haste more speed’ approach. By relaxing and evaluating the situation from that perspective you may find the bus waiting with doors open, as you step easily on board and enjoy the ride to the destination of your choice!

Cruel Boyfriend Dream

Hi Ian,
I’ve bought your book and I must say that it is really interesting, so I am mailing you to check if my interpretation of my dream is correct.
I’ve been having a relationship with my boyfriend for the last two and a half years and we’ve been having some problems. We started living together since 1sth of May 2011. My boyfriend is great, but we recently took a break at the beginning of the year because of some things he did (example: cheating) and because of stories I’ve heard about him from his best friend (who has been known to lie). Now I’ve been having a dream about this situation:
I’m walking with my boyfriend in the city and we turn into an alley. There we come across a group of people who are beating up someone. This happens to be my boyfriend’s best friend. The people who are beating him up tell my boyfriend (because he wants to help his friend): we’ll leave him alone, but then we get your girl… My boyfriend agrees, they force themselves on me and my boyfriend and his best friend walk away laughing.
Now I know that this is a cruel dream, but it’s really bothering me. That’s why I bought your book… But I don’t really know how to see this dream, I hope you can help.
Greetins,
Jana.

Dream Meaning
It is often the nature of dreams to be working on more than one level, reflecting both an internal process and a situation in your waking life, that directly mirror each other. So whilst your intuition about the interpretation of this dream (being related to your boyfriend) is most likely to be correct, it may also be correct to say that this situation is reflecting some qualities that you may be currently grappling with internally.

When we dream of being in a city, we are often focusing on aspects of our social or work lives. Walking with your boyfriend suggests that in order to move forward you would like to embrace the male qualities that he represents to you (for example assertiveness, autonomy, confidence, protection) and are reflecting on your relationship to them within yourself.

When you ‘turn into an alley’ this shows us a more intimate insight into the dynamic that occurs around your expression of these qualities. The series of events that take place in the alley show us another side to these male characteristics as they ‘turn into’ aggression, domination, betrayal and cruelty. Being exposed to this type of behavior can hit hard and hurt.

It is perhaps this experience that may have lead to a mistrust of your own masculine power. As a consequence your dream ends with you watching as all the male aspects depart, including the ones you would perhaps still love to engage with.

Dreams have an amazing way of creating opportunities for personal growth. I am sure you will see your social and work life take a positive turn as you gain confidence in your ability to assert yourself.

Violent Attack Dreams

Hello Ian

Firstly, thank you for reading my email. I have been having nightmares on and off for a couple of years now and they seem to have the same theme:

1. being a witness to someone being violently attacked and being unable to help them.
2. witnessing someone kill themselves. Both very scary and they wake me up feeling very fearful.
3. bumping into the object of my desire and he is wearing very heavy shoes that in some way have weights on them.

Many thanks for reading my mail.
Regards, Tracy.

Dream Meaning
When we experience recurring dreams it is often an indication that there is a situation in our waking lives that needs resolving. As you have had these dreams for a couple of years now, this may give you an idea of the time span that this situation has been present.

Dreaming of ‘witnessing a violent attack’ shows evidence of an inner conflict that you are currently observing; that may also be mirrored in your waking life. Death in a dream often represents transformation, so together they seem to reflect some discord within, involving a personal transformation. Your third dream gives us a bit more of an idea as to the nature of this process.

The object of your desire is male, which suggests a strong attraction to engage with your ability to be assertive. Bumping into him might reflect a chance or opportunity for this to happen. Shoes often represent status or signs of individual expression and how you are perceived publicly. The fact that they are heavy indicates a weight of importance, responsibility or even habitual ways of being that have been impeding your ability to assert your self-expression and hence your freedom to move forward.

There is a lot of energy present in your dreams, this may be what has caused you to wake fearfully, but it is yours to embrace and is the fuel for transformation. Embrace your opportunity to strike out on the right foot into a vibrant future with new dreams to explore!

Locked Out of House Dream

Hi Ian,
I keep thinking I will lock my self out of the house that the door will slam shut behind me, so I am half in half out using my body or foot to stop it closing, or I think I have left the keys inside after I close the door to go out . I feel sick and have never forgotten my keys but I search through my bag . I dream this and also it happens while I am awake. Sounds silly, I know but would appreciate, if you could give me the meanin .

Best wishes
Christine

Dream Meaning
This dream suggests that you are experiencing a transformation into a new phase of life. This transition seems to be raising concerns for you about forgetting, or losing an important aspect of yourself in the process.

When we dream of a house we are usually dreaming about our ‘self’. Losing your keys might indicate that either there is something you are feeling responsible for that has been taken out of your hands or perhaps you have committed to something that has resulted in your no longer having ‘sole’ responsibility for your actions.

This challenge is quite a new experience for you and hasn’t been easy for you to stomach so far. However the fact that you ‘have never forgotten your keys’ suggests that you are very capable and assured of yourself in ordinary circumstances and that if you look ‘within’, rather than searching for what you fear you are ‘without’ you will ultimately be enabled to view all potential new outcomes and unlock the best one for your future!

It is common for a dream to find it’s way into our waking lives when there is an important message that is not being fully understood, this is a way for us to become more conscious of our process and to allow us to work with it physically. So we really do live our dreams, and dream our lives!

Trout Farming

trout-farmingHi Ian,
Although I work in an office in real life, I keep dreaming that I own a big trout farm but I have to spend all my time stopping poachers from stealing my trout. There is one massive fish that they keep trying to steal using a spinning reel on a rod and I usually end up fighting with the poachers in the water.
Yours, Colin

Dream Meaning
When you dream about fish, you are usually reflecting on how you use your intuition and experience in your waking life. The trout farm symbolises some valuable ideas that you have been working on that have the potential to make a lot of money for you. However, you are concerned that other people will try and steal your ideas without acknowledging the true value of your expertise. Although you have a lot of business ideas, there is one big one which is a real money spinner and you get very upset and emotional when others don’t recognise that you are the person who originally came up with the idea.
