Castle Tunnel Dream

Hi Dr Wallace,
I don’t know if you can help me with my recurring dream. I hope so because it is a nasty one.
I am in a castle tunnel which is about 3 feet wide, and has steps and doors to go through. The only way out is through a hole in the stone floor which is obviously too small to get through, but I try anyway. I always go down head first with my arms to my side and get stuck. I try to wriggle backwards but end up getting tighter and tighter.
I wake up and have to get dressed and go for a walk around the block because I have difficulty getting my breath. My sister used to lock me in the cupboard, down the cellar and trap me under the blankets when I was 4 or 5 years old and wondered if it was something to do with that.
Can you cast a light or give me any idea why I have this dream.

Many thanks

Dream Meaning
Experiencing recurring dreams is often an indication that we may be habitually repeating certain behaviors in our waking lives that no longer feel appropriate for our own healthy progress. Once we change our relationship to these behaviors or beliefs these dreams should no longer have any reason to reappear.

When we dream about a castle we are often contemplating our own self (as when dreaming about a house), however a castle signifies a more robust or defended self and may also encompass familial influences, as castles often housed extended family.

In your dream you are in the narrow tunnels of the castle, indicating that you are exploring some belief structures that have been fundamental to your development in the past but now appear to be self-limiting. The steps and doors may be reflecting steps to take and thresholds to cross in your waking life.

The hole in the stone floor reveals itself to you as an opportunity to move through these limitations and to come out the other side. You take this opportunity and ‘always go down head-first’, implying that you always use your head, maybe creating theories or concepts to try to resolve this tension. Arms usually represent our ability to take action, so having your arms by your side, shows that you are perhaps not following through with the action needed to support your theories. Having made a start, you realize that you are not expressing yourself fully in this way and you try to ‘wriggle’ out of it, maybe backtracking but find yourself becoming more and more restricted.

This dream reflects a desire to express yourself fully and break free from limiting beliefs. Acting upon your new outlook has the potential to be a very empowering experience, enabling you to see the light at the end of the tunnel and walk boldly into an expansive future!

Cat Lover

Dream
my lover dreamed she was looking for a house. I was there and sometimes I turned into a cat,  also she told me not to stand too close to her as my wife was around

Meaning
When we dream, a house usually represents our own self, so your lover is trying to establish her own sense of identity. She see you as part of her identity and part of her life and you turning into a cat suggests that she feels she needs to take care of you and be intimate with you. However, she finds you a bit too independent and mysterious and she is also concerned about how close you seem to your wife and how much your wife knows about your relationship with her.

Changing Rooms

Dream
Hi Ian
My dream is being in a big house and finding more and more rooms as I walk around.  Feeling overwhelmed as I realise I have to clean it all myself.  My children are young again and I have to try to get them to help me but they make excuses and I wake feeling frustrated tense and in a hot sweat.
Ronni

Meaning
Dreaming of a big house shows that you are thinking about potential opportunities for becoming more personally fulfilled in waking life. As you walk around discovering more rooms, you are beginning to realise all the unrealised talents and ambitions that you possess. You are keen to put these talents to work and make a living from them and are currently exploring all the possibilities for doing this.

Although you are naturally talented, you realise this will require quite a lot of work to reach the point where you can begin to make a viable career from your skills. At the moment, all your talents seem like young children to you as they feel very precious and require almost constant attention. You are hoping that as you develop your talents, they will naturally begin to help you achieve a more fulfilling lifestyle.

However, trying to put your developing talents to work is making you feel frustrated and tense as you are probably trying to do too many things at once. Choose the talent that makes you feel most personally fulfilled and put it to work as soon as you can. This will then provide the resources to develop your other skills.

Cinema Bank Robbers

Dream
Hi Ian
I have been dreaming that I’m at the cinema and am just settling down to watch a film when some men dressed like bank robbers start running down the aisles. They are wearing masks and shotguns and are looking for the projectionist so they can have the film changed from a romantic one to a children’s cartoon about robots. What does this mean?
Thanks, Viv

Meaning
When you dream about a cinema, you are usually thinking about your own life story and how it is developing and progressing. The fact that you are just settling down to watch the film suggests that you are entering a new chapter in your life and are starting to get comfortable in your new role. Although you are looking forward to being settled in this new situation, there is some factor that is threatening to disrupt it.

This disruptive factor is probably some tension that has been building up in your romantic relationship. Dreaming of bank robbers shows that you feel that you are not being truly valued in this relationship and that is making you question your further commitment to it. The robbers’ masks indicate that your romantic partner is not being as open and honest with you as you would like.

You also feel that your partner is somehow changing your relationship from a romantic love story into to something more shallow and immature where true feelings are never expressed. However, you are part of this drama, not just an audience member, so you still have the power to give this story the happy ending that you desire.

Climbing on Roofs

Dream
I was fascinated by your item on the Chris Evans Show this evening. I have a recurring dream that i am climbing over a roof and there are high drops that I have to get myself down. Can you explain this?

Meaning
When we dream of climbing over a roof we are reflecting on our efforts in waking life to look after other people and protect them. The high drops that you have to get down represent the times when you feel that you lack confidence in your ability to nurture others. However, the dream message is that you are sometimes unsure of yourself and too critical of your own abilities, whereas in waking life you are extremely competent and loving, even if the people who you give your love to don’t always tell you that.

Collapsing Staircase Dream

Good Morning Ian, At least here in the states it is still the morning. I am intrigued by your website and thought I’d try to see if I couldn’t get some help interpreting a dream that has many aspects to it.

In the dream I am away at a resort/hotel sitting out on a patio enjoying myself with all of the wives of my bosses (who I also consider friends & are all part of one large family). I notice that the cobblestone paths and roadway are not level and very bumpy, I then begin to notice that just about all of the construction is of a lesser quality as far as the plastering, painting etc. I go in the hotel to my room and when I come back out to join the others downstairs, I have to go down a black metal spiral staircase to the lobby area. As I try to proceed down the stairs they keep collapsing and moving as I try to decend. Although I am frightened, I decide that I am able to essentially climb down the structure as if it were a ladder by grabbing onto pieces of metal and climb down hand/foot backward. I am successful in getting to the lobby without any further problems and begin to warn the others but they seem to not care or arent’ listening.
Thank you for considering this interpretation. Dawn .

Dream Meaning
Dreaming about a hotel or resort usually indicates that you are reflecting on a temporary identity that you show to others, a persona. Being on the patio would suggest that it is about your involvement within a specific social or work environment.

You begin by feeling very connected and comfortable with the feminine aspects of your nature and the sense of enjoyment, empathy and community that brings. Your awareness then shifts to the paths and roadways, which are often seen as our potential directions in life, opportunities or career paths, perhaps you are beginning to see the possibility of a rocky ride ahead. This also fits with the disillusion about the façade that has been presented to you.

Your growing awareness triggers a retreat to your room, a more private thoughtful place where you feel most comfortable. From there you realise that in order to reach others in a deeper way, instigate any action or change, or to open more doors of opportunity (all reflected in the need to get to the lobby) you must first tangle with a rigid, controlling and perhaps gloomy framework that is already in place. When you try to move forward upon it, it collapses and moves, this may be symbolic of some restructuring or perhaps an unwieldy structure that you are finding unsupportive.

Then you show great courage and determination, by engaging with your autonomous, creative and assertive self, you take a more unconventional approach revealing a lighter perspective and a less dominating presence (a ladder as opposed to a staircase) and by taking a step back, you are finally able to move forwards.

You are successful, and show a desire to share your experiences with others, it would seem that this particular social or work group are not as receptive as they perhaps first appeared. This dream may be revealing a desire to be part of a group that relate to each other in a more meaningful, connected and open way.

Contact Lens Confusion

Dream
I have a dream where I think I have left my contact lenses in, although every night I take them out. I dig away at my eyes quite hard and have to get up and check they aren’t there. It happens nearly every night. Can you help please?

Meaning
When we dream of leaving our contact lenses in and need to remove them, there is some situation in our waking life that we are trying to understand more clearly.

This dream is suggesting that you need to take a wider view to see the actual reality of the whole situation rather than just focusing on specific parts of it.

It may be that you are trying to dig down to clarify specific details of this situation rather than relaxing a bit so that you can see the bigger picture.

Corridor and Forgotten Room

Corridor and Forgotten Room
HI
I have had this recurring dream, occasionally, over a number of years.  I am in (what I believe) is my house, but it is not my house and not a house I am familiar with, and it is a different house in every dream.
I am walking along the hall (or a corridor) and I open a door and find a room that I had forgotten we had.  It has been totally untouched  and I suddenly remember that it was there when we bought the house, but I had forgotten all about it!!
As I say different room -  different house -  every time, but not any house that we have lived in.
Any ideas what it means?
Thanks

When we dream about a house, we usually are thinking about our self and considering our sense of identity.  Dreaming about different and unfamiliar houses shows that you are become aware of different areas of yourself that you are not routinely familiar with. The hall or corridor symbolises some new activity that you are involved with in your waking life.

The door in your dream is your sudden realisation as you begin to discover a forgotten skill or personal resourcefulness that this new activity is inspiring you to use. The room represents this talent of yours that had apparently been lost. You know that you have always had this ability but have not had the chance to use it, probably because you felt it was of little or no value to you in everyday life.

This forgotten talent may be something that you were really passionate about earlier in your life but had to set aside or stop. This probably because you felt you could not pursue it further because of your circumstances at the time. When you have this dream, it is telling you that you now have the opportunity and resources to express the passion or ambition that you previously had to abandon.

Crazy Woman

Dream
Hello Ian
I am in a safe house for spies and all the rooms are tiled in white like in a public toilet or a mental house. The rooms are full of all sorts of different coloured bottles. A crazy skinny screaming woman is chasing me in the house and I lock myself in the bathroom but she is banging on the door to break it. I am terrified and I know that she wants to kill me  She screams my name all the time and sometimes she threatens me – other times she tells me she is in love with me. I know that she will smash all the bottles and then drown me in the bath if I let her in.
Elizabeth

Meaning
The safe house in your dream symbolises your own self and your need to feel safe and secure. The different rooms in the house represent the different aspects of your own character. Tiled white rooms suggest that you always try to keep your emotions under tight control so that you don’t end up in any messy situations. Although you appear calm and in control to the people around you, the coloured bottles show that you are bottling all your feelings up inside you.

Your emotional self appears in your dreams as the skinny, crazy woman. She is skinny because you are limiting your emotional growth by keeping other people at a distance and she is shouting crazily because you try not to listen to your own real feelings in waking life. By locking yourself in the bathroom, you are trying to lock away your own needs but they just won’t go away.

You are terrified to express your needs to other people in case you might release a whole lot of bottled up feelings and end up drowning in self pity. However, you need to find a healthy outlet for your feelings, rather than just spying on them from a safe distance.

Crossword Puzzle

Dream
Hi Ian
I am a big crossword fan and really enjoy working out puzzles. I keep having a dream that I am doing a crossword. I am sure I know the answers but when I try to write them in nothing seems to fit. I keep trying to write the answers again and again until all the white boxes are just a mess of black ink. I get very angry and start stabbing my pen to paper and start shouting and then rip the newspaper up. I throw my pen down and burst into tears. Am I going mental?
Shel

Meaning
Dreaming of doing a crossword suggests that you are trying to work out some sort of real puzzle in waking life. It also indicates that you prefer taking a black and white approach to most things in life because it minimises uncertainty. This is probably a situation that has been puzzling you for some time and you are trying to work out the correct response.

Although you feel that the answer to your situation should be quite straightforward, none of the responses that you come up with seem to fit. Even though your solutions aren’t working, you keep trying them again and again because you are sure you have the right answers to the problem. However, the more that you give the same old answers, the messier things become.

This makes you very cross because you feel that you can’t seem to communicate what seems a simple answer to a simple question. Rather than giving up on this frustrating situation and moving on, the most obvious answer to your puzzle is to tear up the rules and make up some new ones of your own. Take a more colourful approach to this problem and you will open up new opportunities.
